I think at least half the women on the planet can identify with at least parts of my story. Who hasn’t felt the intense pain from being dumped by a man she loved? Who hasn’t been the one that ended a relationship with a man who loved her? If you have, you know this can also be quite painful.

In my case, I was 56 and experienced being the dumper and the dumpee both within a span of four months. The last time such a thing occurred I was about 23. It’s really quite different when you’re 56, especially when you let go of an 18-year-old seemingly quite solid marriage on a gamble for a man that you are magnetically drawn to, only to have him end the relationship four months later.

This entire affair was a huge shock to my emotions. I tried a number of modalities to heal and move on. The final effort was made on the Camino, with its great emotional purge. This travel memoir is set in the Camino, and about 80-85% is me on the trek. About 15-20% consists of flashbacks to the horrendous year I had in 2012 as I work through the story in my mind.

Along the Way I meet some interesting people, but I also hike alone a lot along this path that’s about 2,000 years old with an energetic vortex.

Come along with me and you’ll get a feel for what it’s like to walk this mythical, magical, mystical path, as well as the issues that come with sharing a dormitory with both men and women. You’ll know what obstacles await anyone traveling this journey, as well as the joys and triumphant feelings that accompany it.

At the end you’ll learn the insights I gained along the Camino that healed me enough to where I can say, “I am glad it all happened, and I’m free now.”

You will also learn how I walked the entire trek blister-free, and nearly always free of pain. Yet, some things I would do differently if I had it to do over—and I probably will—next time walking about 1,000 miles, hiking through both France and Spain!

Healing a Midlife Crisis on El Camino de Santiago edition by Susan Schenck Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Ive read several of Susan's previous books and I must say, they never fail to please. I found it very fascinating the way Susan was able to move between her inner journey and the outer one on El Camino. I often felt like I was walking right
there beside her. As always, shes very candid with her thoughts and observations not only of herself, but of other pilgrims on the the great journey across the stunning landscape of Spain. Susan did the research before she ever started the pilgrimage adding to it with her personal experience, all the while talking to other people in the villages along the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to experience El Camino without having to walk the 500 miles. Susan's interior journey is equally as compelling.
Healing a Midlife Crisis on El Camino de Santiago by Susan Schenck is a must book for anyone considering experiencing El Camino. After reading this book, I have a much greater appreciation for El Camino, what to expect, what to pack, and how to prepare. Not only does this book discuss the physical demands but also the daily routine including where to sleep and eat. The author discusses the vagaries of the weather and how to prepare for that. It gives you the flavor, the atmosphere surrounding the journey. I come away with a much better understanding of what to expect if I were to experience El Camino.
This author made me smile with all the "love trials" she goes through in her head while walking El Camino de Santiago. Her triangular love story was intertwined with very practical advice for us would be pilgrims; like how to do laundry, finding a bed, keeping sore knees in check to name a few. It was an easy read and I appreciated the descriptions of how to get along by an "ordinary" person who had actually completed the 500 miles without injury. An honest and informative book written for anyone contemplating the the challenge.
Unless you are interested in knowing how many kilometers (miles) this author walked daily, what the ascent or descent was for each day, how she slept each night (Did someone snore in her room? Did she have to take a sleeping pill?), and details about her intimate life (or lack there of)...you will find about 75% of this book to be boring and repetitive. This book would only be an interesting read for the author's mother, close friends, ex-husband and former lover (if these men care to know what she is sharing with the world about their past relationships). I can't imagine why the author thought that all of this information would be interesting to the rest of us. At the very end of the book the author did share some interesting tidbits about what she had learned from this experience along with how and what to pack if you plan to take this pilgrimage along the Camino yourself, but you'll have to wade through a lot of her personal information that most of us really don't need or want to know.
The author gave enough details about her life that you wanted
her to be happy when she went home. She was.
